  • The Spiritual Man: Abraham, a Pilgrim Called for God’s Divine Purpose

Abraham obeying God’s call by faith ( Genesis 12:1 )

    Key Scripture:
“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee.” — Genesis 12:1 (KJV)

The spiritual man is not defined by religious titles or outward activities but by his relationship with God and his willingness to obey divine instruction. He is a pilgrim on the earth, living not for his own ambitions but for the eternal purpose of the Kingdom of God.

Among all the patriarchs, Abraham stands as one of the clearest examples of this calling. God summoned him to leave everything familiar and embark on a journey directed solely by faith. Abraham did not know where he was going, but he knew who had called him. As Scripture declares, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out… and he went out, not knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8).

God later revealed Himself as “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:6). This divine identification was not accidental. It testified that these men had entered God’s school of faith, obedience, and transformation. Through their lives, God displayed His covenant, His character, and His redemptive purpose.

Abraham teaches us that the spiritual life begins with separation unto God. Before God can entrust a person with His purposes, He often calls that person away from self-reliance, worldly security, and human wisdom. The spiritual man learns to depend entirely upon God’s promises and divine guidance.

The experience of Abraham also reminds us that God’s purpose is generational. God worked deeply in Abraham so that future generations could inherit the blessings of faith. Through him, God began forming a people for His own name (Acts 15:14), demonstrating that His plan has always been to reveal Himself through transformed lives.

True spirituality cannot be reduced to knowledge alone. It is not enough to admire Abraham or merely speak about the God of Abraham. We must walk the path that he walked—a life of surrender, obedience, perseverance, and trust. As Scripture declares, “The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17).

Today, God continues to call men and women into His school. He is looking for believers who will submit to His discipline, embrace His Word, and become faithful representatives of His Kingdom. Like Abraham, we are invited to leave behind the limitations of the natural life and enter a journey where every step is governed by divine purpose.

    Reflection

    • Am I living according to God’s voice or according to my own understanding?
    • Have I embraced the discipline that produces spiritual maturity?
    • In what ways can my life reflect God’s character to those around me today?

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Abraham, a man who obeyed Your voice and walked by faith. Teach me to become a true spiritual man, willing to submit to Your discipline and follow Your guidance. Remove every confidence in the flesh and help me to trust in Your promises alone. May my life reflect Your character and fulfill Your purpose on the earth. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
